Walter at the Piano

The video clips below were taken from a home video tape originally recorded in 1993 by Sheron Dixon while she and Walter were staying at The Lodge in Williamsburg, VA.

“Satin Doll” – 1:40
Upon their arrival, it took Walter no time at all to discover The Lodge’s beautiful grand piano which was located in the lobby between the bar and the restaurant. And, wonder of wonders, it was actually in tune! Walter couldn’t resist. After obtaining permission from the management, he sat down to play. Sheron ran to their room, retrieved their camcorder, and began recording Walter at the piano.

“You Fascinate Me” – 2:02

“I’ll Remember April” – 2:24
Walter stopped playing for a while, and Sheron returned their camcorder to their room. Much later, Walter began to play again. By that time, The Lodge was teaming with guests in the lobby, the bar, and the restaurant. It was very noisy, just the kind of environment in which Walter had played professionally for so many years. Clearly, he was loving every moment of it.

“Stormy Weather” – 3:53

Rain – 3:11
Sheron didn’t expect him to play for long. However, when 45 minutes had passed, and he was still playing, she once again ran to their room for their camcorder. She managed to capture another 30 minutes of Walter’s great music.

“Improvisation for Ducks in the Rain” – 1:48

“Long Ago and Far Away” – 6:52
Although these clips contain some of the annoying distractions that usually accompany home videos, they also reveal the warmth and the charm of familial relations. But most of all, they allow us to listen and watch as Walter plays for us some of the all-time greatest tunes in his favorite environment.

“Gone with the Wind” – 2:36
