During 1961 and 1962 Walter Dixon produced a number of radio programs for WHAM; Composite was one of those programs. Consisting of a potpourri of entertaining 15-minute features presented by various WHAM personalities, Composite aired on weeknights from 10:00 PM until midnight. The music of Douglas Duke was one of those nightly features, appearing in the 10:45 to 11:00 PM time slot. This first edition of Composite’s “Douglas Duke Organ Stylings” presents Doug’s first and second appearance on that show. As a bonus, it also includes 5 never-before-heard Douglas Duke arrangements captured by Walter Dixon and Ed Mitchell during their many recording sessions. Although they never aired on Composite, for the purposes of this CD they are presented with Doug’s opening and closing themes in the traditional Composite format. This special edition of the WHAM Composite radio program contains several never-before heard recordings of Douglas Duke. Although largely unknown, Doug Duke was one of the most outstanding jazz pianist/organist of the 2oth century. This Composite edition represents the first in a series of seven volumes featuring Mr. Duke’s extraordinary arrangements which have not been heard since they first aired over WHAM in 1961-62. Produced by Walter W. Dixon Jr. through Dew Productions
Inc. at radio Station WHAM in Rochester, New York 1961-1962. |
